Interviews

Stealian Co., Ltd.

We had the opportunity to speak directly with Kim Wooseong, Manager of the Solution Business Division at STEALIEN Inc.

Provision of Security Solutions for Mobile Applications

QWhat role do you typically fulfill at STEALIEN?

I originally worked as a security engineer at the STEALIEN headquarters in South Korea. With the launch of our business in Japan, I transitioned to a position where I leverage my technical expertise to closely listen to customer issues and propose and support the most optimal solutions. My daily work consists of listening to customer feedback on-site and collaborating with internal teams to make informed decisions. I find my job very fulfilling.

QWhat was the background behind the launch of services by STEALIEN?

STEALIEN was founded in 2015 by white hat hackers. Since our founding, we have been dedicated to taking the perspective of the attacker in order to protect our clients’ security. With a focus on mobile application protection and penetration testing, we offer our services to a diverse range of clients, including government agencies, financial institutions, mobile service companies, and software businesses.
In 2019, we established a subsidiary in Indonesia. Furthermore, for three consecutive years since 2022, STEALIEN has been selected by the Financial Times as one of the High-Growth Companies Asia-Pacific.

QWhy did you consider expanding into Japan?

In recent years, the promotion of digital transformation (DX) in Japan has led to increased use of mobile applications. However, this rise in use also leads to an increased threat of cyberattacks. Of course, this is a global trend and not limited to Japan. Nevertheless, in South Korea and Western countries, security standards and recommended guidelines for mobile applications are gradually being established for each industry and sector. On the other hand, Japan is still working to develop those standards and guidelines. We anticipate significant continued growth in demand within the Japanese cybersecurity market. However, we also recognize ongoing challenges in implementing security measures for mobile applications. We see this as a business opportunity where STEALIEN’s services can make a meaningful contribution.

QCould you tell us about the strengths and unique features of STEALIEN's services?

Our company is developing MobiShell, a security service specifically for mobile applications. Compared with similar services available in Japan, our solution emphasizes protection features such as source code obfuscation and tamper-proofing. It is equipped with a variety of protection features that include virtual keypads, detection of fraudulent geo-location manipulation, and prevention of unauthorized screen capture. MobiShell is easy to implement and provides robust security. Furthermore, our white hat hackers conduct penetration tests from the attacker’s perspective to safeguard your assets and credibility against potential threats.

QWhat challenges have you experienced when doing business in Japan?

In my regular discussions during exhibitions and business meetings, I find that while many prospective Japan clients express a strong interest in our services, a significant number still grapple with the benefits of implementation and cost-effectiveness. As I mentioned earlier, countries such as South Korea have already established guidelines, so security assessments and enhancement measures are generally regarded as mandatory. In contrast, many clients in Japan do not necessarily feel the same level of urgency, so it is difficult for them to visualize or fully grasp the actual benefits and effectiveness of such measures. However, it is certain that incidents such as hacking or malware infections can lead to enormous losses for companies, in terms of both financial impact and loss of trust from society. Therefore, it is essential for STEALIEN to communicate the importance of risk mitigation in addressing these challenges.

QWhat kind of developments do you envision for the future?

We view the Japanese market as a core hub for our overseas operations, and we intend to focus our efforts there. The first step to enhancing STEALIEN’s presence in Japan is to expand our business through partnerships with Japanese companies, focusing primarily on companies based in Tokyo. For example, if there is a company that is knowledgeable and has expertise in the field of security but does not have its own solution, we believe that leveraging our MobiShell product will lead to mutually beneficial business expansion. Moving forward, STEALIEN aims to collaborate with our partner companies to develop solutions that address market needs and create new value in the field of mobile security.
